The Magician is the second card of the tarot deck’s Major Arcana. The number associated with the figure of the Magician is one, as he stands for the power of creation — the act of taking the primordial potential represented by the Fool and transforming it into something of actual substance that is real, true, and tangible. The Magician could also rightly be represented by the concepts of divinity, magic, and power of an extremely potent variety.

On a basic level, the Magician card represents many profound and monumental concepts along the lines of wisdom, power, action, and creativity. Just as the Fool is all about the initial potential of many things, the Magician is all about these same things made real and put into astonishing motion. The Magician quite literally has the power and this power has no limits or restrictions. He is the conduit for all the infinite wonders of the divine and the vessel through which this power flows into the world. He also represents the perfect union and balance of all things – positive and negative, creation and destruction, et cetera.

The Magician is traditionally depicted as a young, attractive, and robed male figure who has a definite air of confidence and “knowing” about him. The sign of the infinite – or alternatively, the Holy Spirit – is above his head and his belt takes the shape of a serpent devouring its own tale, both emphasizing the timelessness and omnipotence of the Magician. In his right hand, he holds a wand that is pointed toward the heavens, while his left hand is pointing toward the earth itself (“as above, so below”). He is usually standing next to or behind a table that has the symbols of all four tarot suits placed upon it. A garden of roses and lilies typically grows in the foreground.
The Magician image as a whole is meant to symbolize man’s connection to the divine, as well as the earth’s connection to the heavens above. It also reminds us of the concepts of unity, eternity, aspiration, and all the ways these concepts fit into the life of man.

When you see the Magician tarot card pop up in a reading, he could stand for either the querent (if he is male) or for someone else. In the instance he stands for the querent, the Magician’s appearance could be taken to mean that said querent is going through a period during which he is feeling quite charismatic, witty, powerful, or “on point”. In addition to power and creation, the Magician can also stand for verbal eloquence and charisma, so the querent may simply be a good speaker, a convincing salesperson, or perhaps simply a person whom other people listen to, gravitate toward, or hold in high regard.

When the Magician stands for someone other than the querent himself in a reading, it is likely to be a figure with similar qualities to the ones listed above. The person in question could very well simply be a charismatic, magnetic individual, but it is important to note that he could just as easily be someone deceptive who uses his gift for persuasion to accomplish darker things. The Magician can represent people in certain professions as well – medicine, science, and invention to name just a few.

The Magician can also signal the revelation of new ideas and innovative new vistas when he shows up in a tarot spread. The querent may have recently come up with a groundbreaking new plan for a business endeavor, a possible solution to a dilemma, a fabulous new creative idea, or something else along those lines. The surrounding cards and the position in which the Magician appears in the spread will better define the exact nature of the revelation and advise the querent on how to proceed.

For those of you who enjoy curling up to a great television program at the end of a long day know that we are living in a time of numerous options . If you have a DVR you might often find yourself having to prioritize what you are going to record because there is so much great content available. Yes, we do indeed live in an amazing time when it comes to television programming. As 2009 is close to wrapping up, let us look back on some of the fantastic TV programs that were provided to us over the past year.

The Mentalist – CBS

First airing in September of 2008, The Mentalist has shown tremendous success both in the amazing shows the team has produced as well as the ratings it has received. The premise of the show surrounds a team of CBI (California Bureau of Investigations) agents and their quest to solve crimes. Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) leads a team of agents that work for the CBI. Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) assists the team in solving cases using his talents as a Mentalist. His ability to read people and get to the true cause and motives of the crimes is truly a pleasure to watch. Patrick Jane is not officially a CBI agent but is helping the CBI because he wants to put away Red John, the murderer who killed his wife and daughter. The Red John storyline has continued since the inception of the show and provides for some truly haunting episodes.

Glee – Fox

Another bright spot in the 2009 lineup has been the musical comedy Glee. The cast and musical scores make each show a remarkable production similar to a Broadway Musical. Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) is the head of the glee club at McKinley High. Having been a musical performer during his high school years, he wants to bring back the joy of singing to his current students. Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is the head of the Cheerios (cheerleading squad) and is a thorn in the side of Will Schuester. The comedy between the two of them alone is worth tuning into this show for. The singers on this show are truly remarkable as they take current and classical music and truly bring it to life. The show also does an amazing job tackling the current issues going on for teenagers in high school.

The Big Bang Theory – CBS

Leave it to a bunch of scientific nerds and a beautiful actress to capture America’s heart in The Big Bang Theory on CBS. The show is written and produced by the talented Chuck Lorre (of Two and a Half Men) and Bill Prady (of Gilmore Girls). The show is centered on four friends who work together at a University in the science department. Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki – of Rosanne) is the leader of the quirky bunch and is romantically involved with his neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco – of 8 Simple Rules). Leonard’s roommate Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) is the anal and eccentric comedic genius behind the shows success. The story lines are very current yet intelligent as Lorre continues with his exceptional writing ability. The Big Bang Theory is definitely a show that will take your mind off of the everyday.

These were three of the many shows that captured our eyeballs and filled our DVR’s this year. Stop by and cast your vote on your favorite TV shows of 2009.

While Florida State has excelled in several sports, its football team in particular has become renowned. However, here are some lesser-known facts about the football program at Florida State: 1. Florida State was once West Florida Seminary Football at West Florida Seminary started at 1899 (or earlier). Then in 1901, the school became Florida State College. The college won its first football state championship in 1904. Then in 1905, the school became a women’s college: The Florida State College for Women. Following the end of World War II, Florida’s university system experienced a rearrangement. In addition to their pair of national championships, Florida State has also won Dixie or ACC conference titles, 15 times (they were co-champions in 1995 and 1998). FSU has played to two ties in Bowl games Throughout its history, Florida State has an overall Bowl record of 20-13-2. The first tie was in the Gator Bowl (1967), against Penn State (17-17). Then in 1984, FSU would tie Georgia in the Citrus Bowl-by the same score: 17-17! Furthermore, FSU has never lost in a Gator Bowl, earning a total 5-0-1 record. Interestingly, Florida State has twice clashed with its intrastate rival, the Florida Gators, in Bowl games. In 1995, FSU defeated Florida 23-17 in the Sugar Bowl. Floriday State University announced on Wednesday that coach Bobby Bowden will remain with the team – for now. FSU president T. K. Wetherell said that the university would defer the matter until the end of the season; he would not, he iterated, make any decisions about the coaching staff in the middle of the season. He also added that the new head coach would be the current offensive coordinator, Jimbo Fisher. After Bowden leaves the university will negotiate an agreement to have Fisher begin working as soon as possible. The coaching controversy began this week when the chairman of the University, Jim Smith, said that this year should be Bowden’s last and that the Fisher-Bowden arrangement wasn’t working. Bowden, who has been with the team more than 40 years, has repeatedly indicated that he plans to coach through the 2010 season. Fisher’s current contract, however, calls for the university to pay him $5 million if he is not head coach by January of 2011. Bowden met briefly with Wetherell on Monday to discuss, in part, the fact that this year may be Bowden’s last as head coach for the Seminoles and Smith’s insistence that Bowden leave. The start of the season has been one of the slowest for FSU since 1976. But Bowden insists that the Seminoles can turn the results around. Wetherell announced his continued support for Bowden. “Two years ago coach Bowden and I, and others, stood together and announced that we were beginning a period of transition for the football program, that plan is in place and will produce results, given the opportunity and support. Any coach can choose to retire at any time,” Wetherell said. “However, it is the athletics director’s responsibility to determine which coaches are hired and which contracts are extended. ” Wetherell had always supported Bowden, a fact the head coach has acknowledged. Bowden also added that the most important matter in the controversy is the team and its focus against the next opponent. The problem began because the Seminoles, contrary to expectations, have struggled through the beginning of the season. Bowden, who initially made FSU a winning machine, is now facing critics who say the team ought to be playing better this season. Two bad Saturdays in a row have led to doubts; despite having quality players, the team has made too many mistakes in the last games: fumbles, dropped passes, missed tackles. “If I was 40 years old I’d be shakin’ in my boots,” Bowden said. “But I’m 79. I’ve been through it. Most of my coaching is behind me. It don’t bother me that much. The only thing I worry about or am concerned about is it a distraction for my team? And it isn’t. I tell them what to listen to, what not to. ” Despite the flurry of both criticism and support, the door has been left open for Bowden to make a graceful exit. There have been suggestions that Bowden retire at the end of the season to avoid a rough end. And if the season ends a sour note, someone close to Bowden said, Bowden might very well do so. Right now, however, what matters is that the Seminoles focus on recovering. Their next game is against Georgia Tech on Saturday.

The team MVP of 2007, 21-year-old Preston Parker, was dismissed of the FSU Football team after being arrested for the second time in less than a year, after been charged of driving with the influence of alcohol and consuming marihuana. Parker was already on probation and was ordered by the court to community service and bi-weekly drug testing.

Parker was found asleep behind the wheel in a drive-thru of McDonalds around 4:42am on Saturday. The police stated that Parker admitted been drinking and smoking marihuana. Parker tested positive in the marihuana use and tested 0.054 of blood level of alcohol. With these charges Parker fine will be up to $1000 and up to six month of prison.

This past Monday, FSU coaches dismissed the wide receiver base on his latest arrest and the violation of certain rules, which were already imposed to him after letting him come back to the team during the summer, after his incident of last April. Back then, FSU gave him a two-game suspension and set up stricter rules such as 50 additional hours of community service, bi-weekly drug tests and required him to move into a controlled dorm, since the receiver had already been arrested once before, but they gave him a chance to vindicate his behavior and be a role model for the team. However, the player violated this on Saturday and his coach Bobby Bowden dismissed him immediately.

”Preston Parker has been dismissed from the Florida State football team due to his latest violation of team policy,” Coach Bobby Bowden alleged in an announcement released.

Parker got into problems for the first time in November 2006 when the police was called from electronic store that accused him of attempting to steal a compact disc. He agreed then to go through to a diversion program and shortly the charge was dismissed.

However, a major issue came on April 2008 when he was arrested on gun and drug charges. During that time, he was charged with 12-month probation and 50 hours of community service. Now, with this last incident committed within less than a year; he completely lost his opportunities with the FSU football team.

During Parker’s time with FSU, as a sophomore in 2007 he was named team’s offensive MVP after catching 62 receptions for 791 yards, rushing for 270 yards and with 52 rushing attempts. Although during 2008 Parker returned to action after his two-game suspensions against Western Carolina and Chattanooga and guided Florida State with 40 receptions, the rest of his statistics of 372 receiving yards, 10 carries for 87 yards, were not even close to his numbers in the 2007 season.

Now with his dismiss, FSU is looking into other three new receivers and has two returners and one freshman to replace Parker’s position. On the other hand, Parker is already too late to list himself to the draft but could have a chance to be selected in the league’s supplemental draft or to get scholarship somewhere else. Let’s hope for the Seminoles to find good replacements for next season and for Parker to learn from his mistakes and change for good so he can still have a future in football.
